Google Play won't allow downloads

Hiya

After having iPads for forever (work related) I left that job and realized I still had a tablet around the house. Found my Xoom and charged it up. Was stoked when it opened and I did a factory reset and started setting it up.

For some reason, it won't allow me to connect or download anything from the Google Store. Something about the OS being out of date my Verizon guy said. Is there any way around it?

Would love to know.

Thanks in advance, I have a six year old who would love to play minecraft again :)
