Updating UK Xoom to Android 4.1 or newer

Now that BBC iPlayer does not support downloads on 4.0.4 is there anyway to upgrade to 4.1 or newer?

Also I can't get into Google Play store, I get the no connection retry message which is annoying. I suspect these two situations are connected.
