microSD Card + Grooveshark

I use a Google TV. That is the "technical" level I'm at. I have no experience with, and have never owned, a Mac or Windows device.

Aside from the Logitech Revue GTV, we have in the house a Blackberry 9860 smartphone and a Motorola Xoom wi-fi tablet.

We use Grooveshark a lot. Grooveshark Mobile

What I'd like to know is how do I go about transferring the music in my Grooveshark Favorites to the microSD card on the Xoom. We want to be able to take the microSD card from the Xoom and place it into the Blackberry. Grooveshark is freely available on the Xoom, but not on a cellphone. Does the solution absolutely include having to use a Mac or Windows device to accomplish what I'm trying to do? Thanks

Good Evening.... (^_^) I tried to master reset my Tablet while it's Low on Battery while in the process I followed this steps
  1. Turn tablet off. You may need to use two hands in this process to press and hold buttons properly.
  2. Turn on the tablet with power button, wait a full 2 seconds from the time the tablet starts showing the red Motorola logo, then press and hold the down Volume key. (you should not hold down the power button after it turns on and logo appears)
  3. "Android Recovery" will appear on top of screen if timing is done correctly. Release volume button. (if you continue to press volume down at that message, the message will cycle through "RSD, Fastboot, and back to Android Recovery. Make sure message states Android Recovery before you go to next step). If stuck at a RSD protocol or Fast boot screen, reboot the tablet by holding power button then pressing the volume up).
  4. While screen states "Android Recovery", Press volume up button, the screen will say "Entering Android recovery mode" and a few seconds later an Android robot graphic will appear alone on the screen. Release buttons.
  5. Hold down power button and then press the volume up key together to see the Android Recovery screen menu selections.

After this steps the tablet suddenly shows an Icon of an android with this mark ( ! ) Inside and dies and its been day 2 that ive been waiting for it / checking with it if it would start up again but nothing happens what should I do....??? And It wont start UP again....

Hi,

Thank you for reading DVD Catalyst Newsletter 148.

Again a bit meager in terms of technology news, but there were a few interesting things announced. Lets get started:

Tech News:

Sony PS4 Virtual Reality: Project Morpheus.

Project Morpheus first-impressions: PS4 VR-headset in motion - SlashGear

It has been in the (web) pipe-line for a couple of months now, but this week, Sony finally unveiled the Virtual Reality system it has been working on to the public, Project Morpheus.

While the name is clearly a reference to the Matrix movies, the design itself seems to be more Tron-inspired, but either way, I am looking forward to where this is going.

Oculus, a small company that brought virtual reality back thanks to a super-successful Kickstarter campaign, and has had a rough time working alone in this market segment, but now with Sony working on it as well, we have an interesting time ahead of us.

Oculus Rift DK2 hands-on and first-impressions - SlashGear

I remember many years ago(early 90's), being on a technology tradeshow and waiting in a long line to experience one of the first publicly accessible VR systems. Interest for VR was at its peak thanks partially to the Doom video game (whom's main developer recently moved to the Oculus company to work on VR), but unfortunately, the computer technology was not that powerful, so graphics in the virtual world were not that impressive.

To profit from the VR hype, accessories such as powerglove controllers and vibration-vests were released for the then-current generation of gaming systems. Despite the increasing popularity of first-person games ever since, Virtual Reality has been on hold until recently.

Google Wear: Moto 360 Smartwatch:

Moto 360 and Android Wear: Motorola talks Wearables - SlashGear

Since the Pebble was released over a year ago, more and more companies have been working on some form of smartwatch. Samsung has taken the biggest risks with Android on the Galaxy Gear, however, its upcoming refresh will feature its own Tizen operating system.

This week, Google announced Google Wear, a customized Android version specifically designed for wearable devices such as a smartwatch, along with an introduction of the Moto 360.

Moto 360 designer: 'we wanted to hit that Whoa! mark'

Quite a difference with the big blocks that are currently on the market. While I haven't worn any watches for over a decade, this is one that looks more fitting. Still a bit thick, but a round screen, rather than a square that reminds me of the calculator watches from the 90's.

But despite the more uniform operating system and stylish design, unless functionality goes further than a simple message/notification display that are pulled from a smartphone, I still don't see much need for it.

Tips:

How to start software development:

First off, I would like to point out that I am a self-taught developer. While I do have a college degree, my field did not include anything even related to application development. What I know is what I have picked up over the years, working through tutorials found on the web and a lot of dedication.

*Getting application ideas:

The hardest part of development is to keep interest while you are working on it. For a first app, don’t go for something super big or overly ambitious. Start with something small, and rather than focusing on what is popular or what other people want, think about something you would use yourself.

Look at your own daily routine, and pick out something repetitive that you do. Maybe you visit certain websites on a daily basis, maybe you visit a cartoon website and send the link to your friends. These are great small tasks you can write your own little app for. Sure it would be amazing to create the next Angry Birds or maybe even Halo or Modern Warfare, but to start with something like that will result in major disappointment. With small apps, you get something that works as you want it to do within a short time, going for something big right away will likely result in either losing your interest because you don’t get to see results within a reasonable amount of time, or you end up pulling your hair out after many months because you made a major mistake somewhere in the beginning. Just start small, and work your way up from there.

*picking the idea apart.

Application development is like building something with Lego’s. On the box, you get to see the result, similar as what you envision your application to look like, but when you open the box, you have nothing but a collection of individual pieces. Before you start with your app, you have to pick out the individual little portions that make up the full program. If you want to create an app that visits a website, you have to look at all the steps it takes before you actually get to see the website.

In order to see a website, you need a web browser. You need internet connectivity, you need to type in the address to go to the website.

If you want to download a picture from the website, you have to find the picture on the website, then you have to download the picture to your tablet/computer/phone, you have to save the picture somewhere.

If you want to send the picture, you have to know where the picture is located, then you have to attach it to a message, then you have to add a receiver to the message, maybe a title or description, and then you have to send the message.

All these steps are individual blocks you will have to create and stack together in such a way that it looks like the picture on the box. And this is just a simple app. Imagine the steps needed to create a big game :)

*where to start.

With the app dissected into multiple single-task blocks, you have to figure out where to start. While many people start with the actual look of the app, I find that if I do that, I always end up making adjustments to it anyway, so I usually just pick one of the main tasks, and build a Spartan GUI with just minimum that I need in order to make it work, and just add new buttons whenever I need them. Once the app does what I want it to do, I move things around until I get the look that I want.

Most operating systems offer “libraries” you can connect to. These libraries are part of the operating system and provide access to certain features, saving you from having to write the full code for it. Things like taking a picture with an iPhone can be done with 2 or 3 lines of code, accessing the GPS and getting a location, also just a few lines. So for a web browser app, you would simply connect to the web browser library, and tell it to go to the website you want to. If you would like to have it go to more websites, you can add buttons, and each button will have it go to a different website.

Once you have something working, you can make a few changes, add something new, and you can see the result of your changes pretty much instantly, and you just keep adding new blocks to your app as needed.

DVD Catalyst Development History:

To give you a better outlook on development, writing a bit about DVD Catalyst’s history might help.

(left to right: mDVD, PocketDVD, DVD Catalyst 1, DVD Catalyst 2, DVD Catalyst 3, DVD Catalyst 4)

A long long time ago in a land far far away, before DVD Catalyst was even thought of, I was converting DVDs to AVI files, and already had a large collection of video files. I was already interested in portable gadgets, and was already familiar with things like HPC’s and Palm Pilots. When the PocketPC came out, I wanted one. When I finally got one, an iPaq 2210 Windows Mobile 2003 PocketPC, I wanted to put movies on it, so I spent some time figuring out what kind of files it liked, and went from there.

Unfortunately, the main conversion tool that was available that was capable of producing compatible video files only did DVDs, so I was stuck having to do it manually. I had to use Windows Media Encoder, which wasn’t really friendly, and because I only had an 128MB memorycard for my iPaq, I had to deal with more than just the format of the file as a limitation.

In order to convert my movies to play on the iPaq AND to fit on my 128MB (119MB real space) memory card, I had to spent a nice amount of time with Windows Calculator and some fancy formula’s in order to get things right.

This is when I started DVD Catalyst 0.0.0.1. The calculations were a pain, so I started working on something that would let me put in the length of the movie, and it would tell me what quality settings I could use to make sure it would fit. A reverse bitrate calculator app.

In order to get the length of the movie, I had to open the file in Windows Media Player, so to eliminate that, I added something into my little calculator that would let me select a file, the app would open it in media player, and get the duration from the file it needed for its calculations.

Windows Media Player also provided the width and the height of the video, so I added that and implemented the calculations needed to resize the video.

With all the numbers I needed (screen size, bitrate) I had to open Windows Media Encoder, add the video file to it and enter the numbers I got from the app, which wasn’t really quick, so I made app talk to Windows Media Encoder and do it all for me. I select the video file in the app, the app does its calculations and then I start the conversion.

With the computer speed at the time, it took about 6 hours for a video to convert that way, and with a large collection of video files to do, I needed something that would let me do a collection of files. I could start multiple conversions at once, but that resulted in a major speed reduction so that was out of the question. So I implemented a “conversion queue” system, aka “batch”.

I add multiple video files to the app, and start the conversion. When one file is done, it automatically continues on to the next. Now leaving it run overnight resulted in more than just one file :)

During this time, I lost my job. I spent a lot of time on job applications, resumes and interviews, but all without success, so I figured that there were probably other people who were in a similar position as I was, so I prettied it up a bit, and released it commercially so it could help pay some bills.

Now, 11 years later, the app is called DVD Catalyst 4 :)

Quite different from back then, but the core concept still remains. It scans the video files (or DVDs), it uses the found information for its calculations, and it runs the conversion.

Thoughts:

Something new:

Again a shorter newsletter, mostly thanks to a lack of news, but also because I am currently working on something new. To not give my competitors (well mainly one that has a habit of copying ideas) a head start on copying, I'm not revealing any details, but I can say that I am very excited and can't wait before it is functional.

Netflix Password:

About 2 weeks ago, I changed the password on my Netflix account. Most of my Netflix-capable devices noticed the change and forced me to re-enter my account information, except one. On my Galaxy Note 3, Netflix is still working, and it hasn't asked me for the new password yet. I do have to point out that the phone hasn't been turned off since, but the Netflix app has been started a couple of times.

Closings:

Well, that is it for DVD Catalyst Newsletter 148.

Thanks for reading and have a great weekend.

Sincerely,

Mitch

Hi I hope a member of the forum can help me with a problem I have with my Xoom. It is running Tem Eos 4 ver 132 rom, CWM 4.0.0.4.
I can boot up the tab, but can't log into the play store, first the clock stops working, then the launcher stops.
I have tried to format data using fastboot / CWM. I have tried to load a new rom seems to load, but when I reboot nothing has changed. I have also tried to use fastboot to load boot.img. No change.
When I load a rom it show: "Stormgr partition". When I tried to load EOS 2 stable rom it gave me "randomoffset: 0x32e.

Does anyone have any suggestions, I am unable to change the recovery even though fastboot shows it has updated.

Thanks

Hi,

Thank you for reading DVD Catalyst Newsletter 149.

This week, it seemed the internet woke up from hibernation. Finally some note-worthy technology news that grabbed my attention.

Tech News:

Fast & Furious 7 to use CGI and doubles to keep Paul Walker in the film.

After the tragic death of movie star Paul Walker, everyone was wondering what will happen with the next installment of The Fast and Furious movie series. When it happened, the movie-shooting was already pretty far in, so any major changes or even starting over would have resulted in a big mess.

Similar as what is being done with the 3rd installment of The Hunger Games (link) and what was done in Gladiator (link), Paul Walker's character will continue to be in the movie with the help of a body double and special effects.

Facebook buys Oculus for Rift VR social.

Last week, Virtual Reality got into the spotlight thanks to an updated version of the Oculus Rift development kit and the announcement of Sony's own VR system, Project Morpheus.

Apparently Facebook got some big ideas after that, and earlier this week, they announced the purchase of Oculus.

Facebook buys Oculus for Rift VR social - SlashGear

While the purchase is great for the company itself, it leaves many wonder what FB's actual involvement will be. As a young company, many people have seen Facebook start out being "nice" and after a massive increase in popularity, it is now seen by many as the new "evil".

The internet is Not Happy about Facebook buying Oculus - SlashGear

Some of the developers who were working on VR implementation into their apps and games are now getting quite worried, including the head developer behind Minecraft:

'Facebook creeps me out,' Notch ends Minecraft for Oculus Rift [Update] | Joystiq

Oculus themselves are not concerned by FB, and even welcome it. With the purchase, the developers if the VR system have better access to funds and people in order to make the product better and more affordable.

Quote:

"When Facebook first approached us about partnering, I was skeptical. As I learned more about the company and its vision and spoke with Mark, the partnership not only made sense, but became the clear and obvious path to delivering virtual reality to everyone. Facebook was founded with the vision of making the world a more connected place. Virtual reality is a medium that allows us to share experiences with others in ways that were never before possible."

Oculus founders: Facebook lets us bring the best VR experience to a billion people

It is still too early to tell what will happen with Oculus, and as a result, Virtual Reality this generation, but there might be a VR-version of Minecraft in the works on a yet unannounced system from gaming system company Razer:

NVIDIA SHIELD gets KitKat in April plus price slash.

My favorite Android device, the nVidia Shield, keeps getting better and better. it is quite clear that nVidia is putting everything it can towards the Shield and the ideas behind it, and they just announced that the latest version of Android is heading its way

HTC announces the new One with depth-sensing camera and larger screen.

Earlier this week, HTC finally let its new flagship smartphone out into the wild.

I'm still happily rocking a Galaxy Note 3, but last year, when I was digging through the forest of different smartphones, the HTC One was a top contender for me. The new HTC One seems to beat everything of the old one, and if I was in the position of picking one now, I'm sure it will be a tough choice.

Despite different internet providers working on trying to get paid for bandwidth, there have been rumors of Amazon adding to its own streaming video content business in the form of a TV-connected device. Tips:

MovieGallery:

Earlier this week, I had someone ask me about how to use individual background images for movies with my MovieGallery Android video player app (available on Google Play – NOOK apps – Amazon Apps), and I realized that while I added the feature a while ago, I never updated the guide for MovieGallery to include it.

I'll be working on that this weekend, but if you are interested on how and what, download the sample zip file from here: www.tools4movies.com/mg2_sample.zip

The zip-file contains a "sample" folder which contains the following files:

The sample-trailer mp4 video, "sample_movie" and its matching cover image, the "sample_movie" jpg file are what most people who use MovieGallery are used to. Of course the big thing with MovieGallery 2 is that it has a build-in cover feature, but the video file+image file combo of the same name has been in MovieGallery from the very beginning.

With the v2 update of MovieGallery, the "folder" image was added, as well as a background image that could be used for a folder, enabling you to display/browse your movies in an even nicer way,

but to enable you to personalize things even further, with the last update I added the ability to use individual background images.

To see how it works, make sure you have the latest MovieGallery (paid 2.4.x version) installed on your device and download the sample zip file (link), and copy the "sample" folder in it over to your Android device.

When you start MovieGallery, it will display, of course, the sample video with its cover image, and when you flip to it in the 2 large-image view modes, it will display the background image set for the sample video.

A week of Amazon Free Apps Of The Day:

Amazon's Free App system has its ups and downs, but this week the collection of apps was actually a bit better than usual. I included the ones from last week down below. Of course, since the Amazon Special is only one day, they are no longer free, but it does give you an idea as to what is being offered.

The Amazon App Store is of course required in order to benefit from these free apps. If you look for the same app on the same day on other app stores such as Google Play, Nabi Apps or B&N NOOK Apps, you still need to pay for them, so you will need to install the Amazon Appstore App on your device. For most devices, this is pretty straight-forward, but on the B&N NOOK HD and NOOK HD+, the process is unfortunately quite tricky.

There are guides on sites like XDA, but to make things easier, I posted up a step by step guide (loaded with screenshots) here:

Thoughts:

Single Multi-Function Device or Multiple Single-Function devices?

Earlier this week, I ran into an interesting article on Engadget regarding the trend that technology is following these days.

Switched On: Return of the digital hub

In short it basically describes the path of technology in recent history, where things started with multiple single-function devices, and then moved towards our current smartphones that have multiple different functions available in a single device, but which is now moving back.

My first (back in 1999) "smartphone" was a combination of a "dumb" cell-phone with a "smart"-ish PalmPilot Pro. Pairing the 2 devices through infrared, I was able to use my smartphone as a dial-up modem and with it, I could "browse" the internet and even use chat-applications such as ICQ. It was a bit cumbersome, but it worked. From there, things started to become more integrated with devices such as the iPaq and the first Windows Mobile smartphone (2002). Since then, things started to move at a steady pace, but until the Motorola Droid and Apple iPhone were released, integration of multiple functions into a single device were still somewhat limited. Since the original Droid and iPhone, things have become somewhat saturated. Every new device released since is (usually) an improvement over the previous generation, but mostly by specifications alone.

With a smartphone that does (mostly) everything you can do on a full-blown computer, manufacturers are trying to come up with the next killer feature, and are now looking at the wrist. Last year, it was a company called Pebble that started the smartwatch craze, but in the current state, these devices are mainly just wireless screens for a smartphone in your pocket. It makes (for some) things a bit easier. Checking notifications, Facebook updates etc, without having to grab the phone in your pocket. Not really that useful, especially with phones mainly increasing in size to make them easier to read and more functional, they are redirecting the same information to a tiny screen. Thankfully, a few companies are looking in a different direction, health. Rather than trying to extend the phone to the wrist, companies are creating wristband-sensors that can monitor health-information such as heart rate.

Regardless, all those years of moving towards building the device that does everything, now we are moving back towards connecting multiple single-purpose devices together. I'm sure Scottevest, a company that once thrived on people using multiple devices with its line of clothes featuring pockets for everything, is getting quite excited :)

Amazon's Free App Of The Day.

A bit earlier (above) in this newsletter, I listed last week's Amazon's free apps. While the initiative is great, a few things I do have to mention regarding them though. There are some true gems among them, but some of them "were" gems when they first came out and have since moved on to newer revenue models. An app such as Doodle God was raved about in reviews when it first came out, but now, years later, it includes things such as social sharing, in-app-purchases and more. And while the actual game remains the same, these changes are quite significant, bordering on annoying.

Closings:

Finally some interesting things to include, so this newsletter ended up a bit longer than the recent ones. thanks for reading and have a great weekend :)

Oh, and if you enjoy reading, like to comment or have any suggestions/request for the newsletter, please give me a shout.

Sincerely,

Mitch

Instructions

Note: You will need bigPart TWRP and execute the repartitioning as instructed.

Your data will be totally wiped! If you have Nandroids, TitaniumBackups, or anything of any value on your internal storage, copy them to your microsd or computer! They will be gone forever! Your microsd card is the only safe haven on your Xoom during this process.

1. Put all needed resources on your microsd card! You will need the original TWRP 2.6.3.0, TWRP 2.6.3.0 BigPart version, your rom, and the Eos 4 BigPart Stingray / Stingray_CDMA Boot Image that goes with your rom.

2. Reboot into recovery. Flash TWRP BigPart. Don't reboot just yet.

3. Go back into wipe menu and wipe everything but /sdcard.

4. Go to reboot menu and reboot into recovery. Disregard the "No OS" warning and don't install SuperSU when asked.

5. When you come back into recovery, it will think your data is encrypted but it's not. Go into wipe menu and "format data". Type "yes" when prompted.

6. When done, go back into wipe menu. Select "Advanced Wipe". Check "system" and "cache" and wipe them.

7. Hit Home then go to reboot menu and reboot recovery. Once again, disregard "No OS" warning and don't install SuperSU when asked

I'm stuck with my Xoom MZ601

Hi, before I start about my problem, please note I did post in the new members area, Astrix assisted me with some suggestions, but I'm still stuck. Do I delete this post, to avoid confusion? Sorry for asking this.

My problem: Xoom is rooted, EOS 4 vr 132, CWM 4.0.0.4, my son was using it until three weeks ago, when it stopped working properly.
Symptoms: launcher stops, apps FC, google play won't allow registration. Can't factory reset in setting sends you to CWM, in CWM wipe data doesn't work, can't load new rom or gapps

Tried: new CWM -won't install, RSD lite with SBF-won't update, Won't revert to stock, fastboot oem lock/unlock doesn't wipe data.

Xoom charges and unlocks, can swipe through screens, apps/browser will open but FC. Recovery/RDS/Fastboot all there. Sometimes needs vol+ and power to start.

Not sure what to do next, was thinking of taking back to Motorola, if I can find an office in South Africa.

Any suggestions are really welcome.

WOW, i haven't been in here for like decade and my US wifi xoom still working great because of all of you. Thank you.

I need some help. Recently not sure what my 2yrs old daughter did and my xoom screw up. So what i did was restore to 3.0.1 and lock bootloader to void any left over issue and to void the headache but still have headache lol.
Code:

fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem lock

So I did an ota update all the way to JB 4.1.2. Then I unlock bootloader
Code:

fastboot oem unlock
. Flash twrp recovery
Code:

fastboot flash recovery TWRP-2.6.3.0-BigPart.img
then i boot into twrp recovery w/o rebooting the system.

Now i'm in twrp then i flash Xoom-Universal-Root.zip where I got it long time ago that i save in my extHD. Reboot and i see SuperSu. So i guess it's rooted.

Now I try to flash OmniROM w/BigPart. I follow all the step in http://www.xoomforums.com/forum/jell...art-mz604.html but when it come to flashing the Rom, I kept getting E: cannot mount data, cache then later it said Rom install successfully. I flash Gapps (E: cannot mount data, cache) but gapps flash successfully, flash update-supersu. Finally reboot.

All i got was a bootloop on OmniRom logo.

Thank you for your help.

PS. Seem like the Xoom-Universal-Root.zip link is dead. Is the root method no long used?

Xoom stuck in bootloop - hard & soft resets tried but don't work - help needed

My wifes Motorola Xoom wifi tablet is stuck in a boot loop. It is displaying the graphic that appears after the initial Motorola red M logo. It does not go beyond that boot graphic. Pressing the power button to power the tablet off does nothing. If I hold in the power button and the up volume button the screen will go blank and then start the boot process all over again and get to the boot graphic and get stuck on that graphic. I have already gone into the recovery menu and completed a factory reset which did nothing to stop what is happening. I think I need someone to give me step by step instructions on how to use my PC connected to the xoom to fix this boot loop problem. Is there anyone out there that would be willing to help me with this process. I will admit that I do not know a lot about the android system but am good at following detailed instructions if someone would be willing to do that for me. Thanks in advance for any help that is offered. My email address is kd_clegg@msn.com

DVD Catalyst Newsletter 150 – 04-04-14

Hi,

Thank you for reading DVD Catalyst Newsletter 150.

Wow, what a week. It started out pretty quiet, and I was actually wondering if I was able to get enough to write about for this newsletter, but on Wednesday, it caught up pretty good.

With its "video service" announcement Amazon introduced something that was rumored for a while, but as usual with Amazon, it was able to outdo the rumors. Also this week Microsoft officially announced big updates for its Windows OS versions.

Anyway, lets get started:

Tech News:

Amazon Fire TV:

The Amazon Fire TV is a tiny box that connects your HDTV to a world of online entertainment. With a huge selection of TV episodes and movies, voice search that actually works, plus exclusive features like ASAP and Amazon FreeTime, it’s the easiest way to enjoy Netflix, Prime Instant Video, Hulu Plus, low-cost movie rentals, music, photos, games, and more.

Windows Phone 8.1:

Microsoft announces Windows Phone 8.1 with Cortana, coming in April | Ars Technica

Microsoft announced some updates for its Windows operating systems, including Windows Phone 8.1. Microsoft is playing catch-up with Apple and Google, and with this update, they are going to start competing with the "voice assistant" features of both companies. Wisely, Microsoft decided to use Cortana for the name, a name that is tied to one of the most popular video game series of the world, Halo. In the game Cortana is an artificial assistant to the main character of the game, so it is fitting to use that for a phone as well. And of course with the name-recognition, it might draw some of the gaming crowd over to Windows Phone as well.

Windows 8.1 Update:

Microsoft adding Live Tiles to Start Menu in Windows 8.1 update - SlashGear

While the mobile version if making big strides, with the "desktop" version of Windows, Microsoft is doing more "damage control". Windows 8 is by many heralded as the new Windows Vista, and with this update, Microsoft is trying to work its way back to what it was + new functionality, rather than something completely new and cumbersome.

One of the biggest things with Windows 8 is that it basically needs a touch-screen in order to make it usable. While you can work with it with keyboard and mouse, it loses its function that way. On my desk, I have a Windows 8 tablet sitting next to me, and have its dock hooked to a screen and keyboard/mouse combo for development work, and for many things, I end up doing stuff on the tablet's screen itself because it takes too many steps otherwise. Working with 2 different application modes is also a nightmare. In desktop mode you can run apps in "windows" next to each other, but many of the stock apps run in "metro" mode, and switch to Windows 8 mode and run full-screen. So for most of my work, I'm still on Windows 7.

Tips:

Conversion quality testing with DVD Catalyst 4 (or HQXT + MultiDevice):
Note: For many readers, this might look like blah blah blah stuff, but if you convert a lot of your movies, the information below can help you get better results with your conversions. Of course an increase of quality of your video files is a given, but in some cases you might want to sacrifice some quality in trade for convenience or speed. In the information below, I try to keep the wording of things as easy as possible, so it should be easy enough to understand, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'll be happy to answer them for you
One of the most asked questions people ask me is what settings to use in DVD Catalyst. For many of the device profiles, there are a few different variations, and while they all produce great results, there are some differences between them.

For full details on the differences, have a look here (link). For this little guide, I'm addressing a different, more important aspect of conversion quality, your own perception of it.

The profiles in DVD Catalyst (or any other conversion application) are basically just a collection of settings that determine compatibility with a set device (iPad profile for iPad-compatibility, Galaxy S4 profile for compatibility with that device) as well as quality settings for the conversion such as resolution and bitrate. Some conversion tools just use the specifications set by the manufacturer for that device, other tools use settings determines by the developer(s) as to what would work well.

As of such, the quality settings set in an application are set by someone other than yourself.

To determine your own personal quality settings for your conversions, you can setup a test-conversion in DVD Catalyst 4 by using its "Multi-Device" feature. During development and tweaking of settings, I use these steps to do that, and it enables me to fine-tune any modifications I might have done.

Here is how to do it.

1. Start with DVD Catalyst 4 and select the first profile you want to use (I'm using the Amazon > Kindle Fire HD7 profile) and insert a DVD or add a video file of one of your favorite movies. Of course you can use any movie for this, but picking a favorite makes it easier to skim through the movie for comparison.

2. We are now going to set up additional profiles (Multi-Device) to include for the test-conversion.

Enable the Power User checkmark, and tap on Modify.

3. In the "Modify" section, along with the video settings, you will see an "add device" button. Tap on this, and a duplicate of your current settings will be created as a second device entry.

4. Make your desired settings-changes, or select a different device profile to use (or both). In the screenshot below, I selected the HQXT variant of the Kindle Fire HD7 profile for the second device.

5. Tap the Add Device button again to create another entry from the currently selected settings, and make the changes you desire. In the screenshot I keep the same profile, but change the CRF setting from 23 to 20 (best quality setting).

6. Repeat this for as many settings you want to test. When done, tap Go to start the conversion.

The same movie (or movies/video files) will be converted using each of the settings you selected. In my example, the movie will be converted 3 times, One using the default Kindle Fire HD7 profile, one using the default HQXT settings for it, and lastly using modified HQXT settings.

7. After the conversion is completed, DVD Catalyst will have organized the videos into folders named after each device profile you selected, and in each of the folders you will find the video files created using the settings you selected. If you used the same profile more than once, it will have (1) or something similar behind the video name.

For comparison, I renamed the files to the settings I used in the shot below.

The file-size differences differ per movie. With the default settings, different movies of similar playlength will be similar in size, but with the HQXT settings, it actually looks at what is needed for the conversion and automatically adjusts itself during conversion for that, so you will see a difference in file-size between different movies. A romance movie will be considerably smaller in size than an action movie, even though the visual quality will be the same.

In this example, the standard profile and the hqxt profile are pretty much the same in size. The modified HQXT profile, 20 instead of 23, is almost twice as large in file-size. The big question is, is it worth the difference?

To tell the difference in quality between the different video files, just open your video player and look at the video. The biggest quality points to look for are scenes with a lot of things going on or fast movement. Explosions, the waves of an ocean, car chases etc.

Video compression works by storing the differences between video frames, and the more differences, the more data is needed to store them. Using the "standard" settings in a conversion tool, the bitrate "locks" the amount of data that can be stored to a fixed setting. This amount is used for slow as well as fast scenes, and if there is not enough available to store the differences, less data than needed is stored, and the visual quality at that point of the movie will have blemishes such as blocks and missing detail. With the HQXT profiles in DVD Catalyst, it automatically adjusts the amount of data that it can use, so it will always have enough. And, unlike with a fixed setting where it will just waste data, it also lowers itself when less is needed, so it only stores whatever is needed, no more, no less.

In the screenshot below, I skimmed through the created videos to the busiest action scene of the movie.

The red section is the part where I was able to notice some differences in quality, so I took that from the 3 different videos. The differences are minimal, but if you look very close, you can see a slight blur with the default settings. With the default HQXT settings, there is still a slight blur at the top, but the center looks more defined. The HQXT 20 setting is even more detailed.

Keep in mind that the above screenshots were taken during a fast action scene in the movie. The screenshot is from a single frame that is only visible for a fraction of a second. When you are watching the movie, its nearly impossible to spot the difference.

Here are the results of a completely different movie:

A 3 hour movie (compared to 1 1/2 hours for the previous one), so larger files in general.

Again, minimal differences, but still visible if you know where to look. Moving water is a perfect part of a movie to use for quality comparisons. Even with normal waves, the amount of changes per frame are murder for most conversion tools. On screen a wave moves just a little between different frames, but with 100's of waves moving only slightly, almost the entire frame is different from the previous one, so to reproduce those changes a lot of data is needed.

With the screenshot above, you can see a similar blur on the smaller files.

The differences aren't that big, especially when you watch the movie rather than looking at a still image, and for me, double the size of hqxt 20 vs hqxt 22 isn't worth the difference to me.

So, what did you just read?

1. Video quality is personal. All conversion tools, including but not limited to DVD Catalyst, use settings either based on specifications of a device or on the developers own preferences/ideas. It is up to you how to make use of them. You can use the settings provided, or experiment a bit and come up with your own "Ultimate" settings.

2. For experimentation with settings you can use DVD Catalyst 4's "Multi-Device" feature to setup a conversion of the same movie using a variety of different settings.

3. The information above also highlights what to look for if you are experimenting with settings and are comparing the different results.

And what is it that you can do with this?

With the information above you can come up with your own preferred settings.

Maybe you rather have a small file-size so you can fit more movies on a single memory-card, eliminating the need for buying more.

Or maybe, because the difference is hardly noticeable, you tweak your settings to the best quality you can notice, rather than just maxing out everything and ending up with extremely large video file-sizes.

For my own conversions I tend to use the default HQXT settings. Not the fastest settings, not the best quality settings, but everything looks great. I don't need pixel-perfect accuracy when I'm watching a movie, in fact in some cases, I find that a slightly less than perfect video quality makes the movie look better, less "fake".

Thoughts:

Netflix:

Not connected to the Fire TV announcement, I ended up (Tuesday evening) canceling my Netflix subscription. I had it for many, many years and recommended it to a large number of people around me as well as on the web, but lately it just hasn't been working for me, so it forced me into making more use of my Amazon Prime subscription.

I don't have much "personal" time, so I don't watch much "live" TV, and with my wife and I not sharing much in terms of movie taste, I usually watch my content on a tablet of some sort in the form of either movies I converted using my own software (DVD Catalyst obviously), or from streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Due to my work, I have access to a large amount of tablets in different sizes, but I do have my favorites. For the last half-year or so, I've been mostly using a Surface RT for video playback. My own videos on a memorycard, and Netflix for if I'm just bored and looking for something to watch. But since the beginning of this year, Netflix has been acting up on the darn thing. I've done all the updates, but it just keeps losing network connection while streaming, even though other apps can still access the web just fine.

Since the issues started, I've been trying different devices, and the only device I was able to use it somewhat reliable on is the Galaxy Note 3.

And while the Note 3 does have a large screen, it is tiny compared to that of a Surface RT, especially for watching a movie or a TV show.

So, with a constant struggle to be able to watch Netflix on any one of my devices, I was basically forced to look on Amazon Prime. For that, I use a Kindle Fire HD. Netflix is available on that as well, but again the same issues, and switching to the same video on Amazon Prime works just fine without having to do anything special.

I already use Amazon Prime for its 2-day free shipping part, so the "free" videos is just an added bonus for me. Content-wise there are some differences between the 2 services, but nothing that makes me stick with one or the other, so Netflix got canceled.
