Need reco's for a ROM to regain usefulness of my XOOM tablet

All,

Some time back, with the ongoing update of Google components, my Xoom tablet became virtually unusable due to the glacial response time. I lamented this fact as I did and still do think this is an awesome tablet and losing the usage was upsetting. I bought a Nexus 7 to replace it, which I use almost constantly, but there was always this thought in my mind of getting the Xoom going again.

Initially I tried the both the Lollipop and Marshmallow ROMs available from XDA, but frankly neither are "ready for prime time". There were and are serious functionality which makes both non-starters.

So, I installed OMNI ROM v4.4.4... on my Xoom tablet. Things seemed better for a while, but again the rot has set in and the response time of the tablet is glacial. Everything takes 30-60 seconds to respond and doing updates takes many minutes, not just a few.

I'm looking for options/suggestions/whatever on the possibility of bringing the tablet back to life.

If you have a Xoom tablet and it's still performing well for you, I would love to know details of the setup.

Thanks in advance

Can't locate Recovery image to download

Hi,
I am trying to root my xoom. I know it is an old tablet, but I don't have money to buy a new one right now, and I like my xoom! I only want to root because I am still running 4.1.2, and some apps don't work anymore.

What I see on the "Everything rooting Rookie" thread one step is to download a recovery: D. Download this recovery image(recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img) and place it in the "SDK_tools folder" at your PC C:drive: here,

That file is not there anymore.

Can someone please get me a copy of that recovery??? OR IS there a different recovery image I can use? I am new to this, so bear with me!

Thank you to anyone who can help a girl out here!

Is your XOOM still useable?

It seems like the latest push of Google Play Services has some sort of issue with the Tegra processor in the Xoom (and many other tablets of the era).

I've rooted mine some time back to Omnirom 4.4.4, but it's amusing watch the thing convulse with endless notices that virtually Google app is no displaying.

Looking at this thread, perhaps there is hope: https://productforums.google.com/for...ay/uX3Xqk2gi_k

I updated my play services and voila! It's working better than it has in a long time.

Google Maps / Allstays Camping and RV work-arround?

Google Maps and "Allstays Camping and RV" APPs used to work great on my Xoom, but will not work after recent Google Maps updates. I can get Google Maps to work by going to an older version, but when I try Allstays it updated Google Maps and then they both will not work. Have contacted Allstays - they say Motorola and Google no longer cooperate on updates.
Thanks

Recommend a browser for Xoom 4.1.2 that works?

Can't seem to find any browser that will work now but the one sent with the tablet. Firefox used to work but just started saying it could not longer use this version. ILoaded SRWare Iron and it flashes on and off. Chrome won't work. I think I had to take Opera off too? Any suggestions for a good browser, that runs, with videos? Or is the last resort now to just use the browser that came with it.? Thanks! jack ":-Dx

Can't factory reset Xoom

Hi, new to the forums and I've browsed through as many threads as I could, but not finding my answer.

I have two wifi only Moto Xoom tablets; one I use and one for my son. My son tried to get into his Xoom and got to the "too many pattern attempts" screen. Of course, wifi is off as a result. We have tried entering every known gmail account we have used on that tablet with every possible password we've ever had hoping to hit the one which was last stored on the tablet. We haven't been able to figure it out.

So, I decided to try and complete a hard reset/factory reset using the keys. And this is where my problem lies. I can get all the way to the point with the android laying down with the exclamation point which the next step (from all websites I've found), is to hold down the power button and tap the volume up key to get the Recovery Menu where I could select factory reset. However, whenever I get to that recovery screen of the android on its back and hold down Power + tap Volume Up key, the tablet just restarts.

I've tried holding down volume up and tapping power, tried holding power and tapping or holding volume down, tried pressing both volume up + power at the same time. No matter which combination I do, I cannot get the recovery menu. All I get is either no response or a restart into the Motorola splash screen.

Mind you, I've never rooted any Android device and don't know how to use SDK Tools or adb.....but I've gotten to the point where I want to connect my Xoom to the computer and use adb to try and see if I can disable the screen pattern lock, however, every link I try to find for adb leads to Android Studio. Any help would be appreciated to try to get this tablet out of the "too many pattern attempts screen". I just hope the Xoom still has the debugging mode on.

If anyone still reads this thing, HI! I'm Rick and I've owned two XOOM tablets since at least 2010. Both are still on the last upgraded OS and I'm considering rooting one but, I'm a bit hesitant to do it as I've had no experience in such things on Android. At any rate, I use my tablets at work, running sound at a venue in the far northwest burbs of Chicago. One I use to connect to the digital soundboard via wifi and the other I use to play incidental music through the system. Both are still running pretty well. While a little slow in the transitions, they are still performing their functions very well! Also, my batteries are still performing well as they've been in and out of use as I haven't had a digital board at my disposal until last year and I just started using the other to play music last month. Dropped a 32gb microsd card in that one.

The digital board I use is a Behringer X32 and I have my own Netgear AC1900 Nighthawk attached to it so I can run the PA from my XOOM! Yes, it has no problems and if there are any latency issues, I sure am not noticing it! I'm using the free version of the Mixing Station app and will probably upgrade to the paid version because this app works very well on my XOOM's as well as my Moto Pure Edition phone. Yes, you could say that I'm a fan of Motorola products!

Cheers!

Rick

I have always thought I wanted to root my Xoom. I've had it many years and it's a tough nut. Been dropped so many times I lost count, spent some time in the rain. I understand that rooting has become fairly less serious than in the old days.

I have tried to start by downloading Android Studio, which says it's going to take several hours???? Is that right? I know I"m DSL but I've always had fairly easy downloads. Says it's 1.9G download. At about 320k per second avg. Seem right?

So is this the way or is there an easier. It's the 4.1.2 and I cannot remember ... is that Jelly Bean. Well I see a number viewing here but I'd appreciate greatly any recommendations.

What got this started? I wanted to use and app that completely shuts down the tablet and it says it must be rooted .... and I ain't. :csmash: THANKS much! jack

Australian XOOM MZ601 root and upgrade?

Hi All.

Apologies for the questions but am completely new to this!

I currently have a Xoom MZ601 Australian version running android 4.0.4 Ice cream Sandwich.

I was looking for guides to Root the device and then hopefully a newer Android version (and overclock anything to get some performance out of it)

Can anyone point me in the direction of a guide / steps that will support the Australian version? I've read a few but they all seem to be for EU?

Also I've read that some of the new OS cause issues with no SD card support - is this still an issue for those that have upgraded??

Appreciate any advice / tips. The Xoom has been sitting away for years and I'm trying to get some use out of it!!

Long shot... wanting to update Xoom from Honeycomb to 4.1.2

Doesn't seem to be a whole lot of activity here anymore?

I recently got my hands on a Xoom (MZ604 WiFi), and which originally had the Canadian firmware.

I followed the instructions elsewhere to load the US firmware, and which generally appears to work (apart from some oddness in the browser).

I have not attempted to load in any data, as I want to update the OS to 4.1.2 first.

Thing is, whenever I try to fetch the update OTA, it says "already up to date"?

Is there some trick to forcing OTA updates? Failing that, I have found a modded ROM that requires "Clockwork Recovery" to be installed first, but it seems that has since been pulled off the web?

I really want to get this Xoom going for a family member whose health no longer permits them to leave their home except for appointments.

Cannot Update, still on 3.1

I recently dug out and blew the dust off my Xoom (there was a lot of dust...). Currently running 3.1, so it's basically useless? When I go into System Updates and hit Check Now... nothing happens. Displaying last checked for update 10/29/17. Looks like I need 4.0 or greater to be able to do anything, and when will I need another update when 4.0 is not enough?

This tablet is still in great condition and I would rather not waste it. Any help on updating would be most appreciated. Basically I'm looking for this to be a device I use to read and watch some videos while working out.

Build Number - HMJ37

I am no tech wizard, but have a good understanding on how computers and systems work. If some sort of custom installation will be required I am definitely willing, but a step by step will be for the best.

Thank you in advance,
James
